Compostulating With The Times

Okay, let's go There.

Now, there's an OLD picture. 1970. Ouch. I'm 15 years old, riding at Second Worst barn. We're in a tiny schooling show here, after I'd "won" everything. The photographer, bored to the eyebrows, asked if I'd take Red Harrison over a fence bareback. Globe and Mail, oh, yeah. 15 seconds of fame.

Bad heckquitation, huh. Red Harrison was a QH (GasP) Stallion. Nice horse. Just a sweet easy going guy, solid liver red chestnut. 15.3 hands of classic Quarter 'orse. His head was very naturally above his withers. Short curly-ish tail:) Not high-headed by any means. Red was justright.

Not like some of the tapir builds on equines seen today. I'm in total love with QH's. Always have been. I just wonder what the point is, to the low-head=slow=relax=always a low head WP thing of today. I just wonder. It seems so backwards. I can't explain why. Straight hind legs. I can't get that, sorry.

Raven, the buckskin I've previously bloogled about, was derned spooky:) I was expecting Red Harrison, I got the physical equivalent of a tapir build in front. Weird. That's all I'm saying:) Ooops, too late, already blathered enough.

I've been browsing some horse for sale sites. Some nice horses, many not so nice.
You should see what goes through our auction. And the breathless glee, waiting for the catalog, from so many people. All looking for that diamond in the rough. Or someone else's wreck.

Meanwhile, diamonds abound at FernV's, and kestrel's, and Tx's, and HP's, etc.
Horses ready to be ridden.

The major difference I could spot between the dressage and the reiner (in the video kestrel kindly posted from mugs excellent blog) was the shape of the horse. The western horse was lower, more cat-like. The WB was all upwards and outwards, the western more inwards and downwards. Coiled as opposed to sprung. Somehow. I'm not sure I know what I mean, anyway:)

Not the same. But so alike. Different builds, different carriages, different shapes, but the same aids obviously interchange easily. Gee, have I been saying something to that effect all along? Probably not.

Which horse would you rather ride? At this ancient stage of my life, the QH would throw me from a much lesser height..
I'd love to ride the QH, but I wouldn't want that disappearing neck thing. That's just me. The WB could throw me much farther down. Snickering the WholE time:)

I would ride a JBG, if ever I'm back in the tack aGain. See, I don't believe in rushing. Wonder how long it would take to get fit again. Ow, the thought hurts..

Another QH solid bright bay gelding I rode, Boomer King was his silly ol' name, quite the barrel horse, me being his first English, fervidly jumping rider. Poor guy. Boomer was a darlin'. I don't know how he put up with me. He was 15 hands on tippy toe, and I was still riding as if my legs should be touching the ground.

Boy, did I sour him well. Aye, aye, aye. I was of the jump every possible ChancE crowd. Still hadn't noticed/heard about flat work, except you trotted and cantered before jumping. It was all about the jump, in those foolish days.

Tangents, right, darn tangents..
Red Harrison was one of my two jumpers in my string of horses at SecondWorst barn. He sold them to Chicago.. I quit, when the 2ndW.guy wanted me to jump a calf-kneed, unbroke two-year old TB mare. I'd been flattened by horses several times by this point, I could see the mare wasn't a safe mode of transportation. I've typed that before, draT!

2nd.W guy was the low-level kinda dealer/trainer, you see. I'm not saying by finances. He never made it out of "don't cut-your-toes-off-in-a-lawnmower" school:) He was pretty low on talent, too. He brought all kinds of crap home from the auctions, to make some money. He just never quite did.

It's such a terrible shame, that Auctions must needs to continue. If only for the horses. They deserve more value placed on them than that. You know the type of Auction I mean.

If not, if they are indeed dangerous/"useless"/terribly ill, they can expire, and if possible, serve us again, with their incredibly rich equine shells. Everything on this earth needs put to use. Or it becomes useless. Nothing ever wants to be useless.

Pretty Flowers, for spring.
Which is SOMEwhere, out there! Not here, although it is raining, 38degreesfahrly-freakin' cold and the snow-drops are up!

To Horses. Your Horses.
They are so lucky to have you. So many don't have the luxury of great owners, who'll care for them to the end of their days.

I need to answer the foolish idea that dressage is elitist. It's just such a wrong way of thinking. I wish we could change the word back to Training.

Hang in there, all you hearts in love with horses.
A horse's great heart stays with you forever.

Its's not crap! I love to read about the horses that helped shape who people have become .As far as riding again ,if you ever came out this way to see your friend DVM,Johnnie is just a 3 hour drive north , he isn't JBG ,but he IS a good boy!

Ooooh, now FernV, that is just so tempting.
DVM friend is talking about retiring a bit early.
Great excuse to come west!
Hugs, FernV.

I couldn't have done any of this without your kind words of support.
They mean a lot, in this tense, weird, rapidly-changing world..

Golightly, I have the quarter horse for you. Blueheron just sent me a pic of her, in all her filthy pasture glory. You'll have to look past winter coat and mud.

Hang on just a sec.

horspoor said...

Okay, that mudball in my avatar is Cami. She stands 15.2h. Is very refined and level to uphill. Has great angle to her hind legs.

horspoor said...

OH, Cami doesn't jump. Well, I've never asked her too anyway. FV's horse may be a better choice. Besides, you'd have to arm wrestle Blueheron for Cami. lol

horspoor said...

Here's a clean summer pic of Cami. Blueheron is riding. You just can't see her.

GoLightly said...

I am the very definition of non-elite.
At least, judging myself, anyway.
,,,,,,,
BlueHeron, I'll meet ya behind the barn, for that arm-wrassle. Cami is gorgeous, love her head. JUST the right size, but she is a red-head:) We'd have to talk, first:)
Ya neveR know with red-headed mares and humans.

Jeepers, I wouldn't be jumping anytime soon! I PB'ed for at least a couple months before I asked Chester if he knew how to jump.
He Did!! Had a heck of a pop to his back end too. Then, owner lost her job, blah, blah, blah.. Barn was bloody skeery, over-run with experienced beginners.
The worst kind.
Oh, well.

Johnny first, please? I haz no passport to foreign lands.

I still want to try a "smooth-mover" too. Rode very few of them, over the years.
I like a big, bold-moving horse, but my back may disagree. Ok, WilL disagree. Vehemently.

Oh, Johnny. (sighs)

Again. A great post.

I have a QH you can ride anytime too, and a Paint (same diff, right? :)) that I would love to have someone as skilled as you give a go. Daughter isn't showing the Paint anymore and has retired him to the trails. He loves to trail ride. He also looooves to jump. I'd like to see how far a talented, experienced rider could take him in jumping. He isn't super fond of flat work and seems to find going around the ring over and over again a tad boring. Gotta give him something more to think on and then he gets excited. :) Travels level, but is not a peanut-pusher and definitely needs work on rounding and collection. Still goes along like a gangly 2 year old who can't figure where everything is supposed to go and doesn't realize his back end is attached to his front end.

He could use you GL and I would be proud to give him to you.

Intruding Star

Here he is in the ring with Courtney

Got a ride to WI? :) :)

secondwindacres said...

Here's another GL. I need GL! See how majestic? :) I'm trying to peel your eyes away from Cami, but I can see that's not going to happen. :(

Your posts are so awesome Go!
And good for you for makin the papers on horse back! Thats the ultimate dream of a young kid.
I've pondered the *sorry* HEAD SET thing also...down and low or higher up...??? My horse seems to enjoy the "higher up" which is fine...I just enjoy it MORE when he doesn't put it up and away... as in...AWAY WE GOOOOO

I bet if you got back in the saddle again TOMORROW you would be back in the groove by tomorrow night.
:P

GL,
Cami's head is tiny. I think she wears a 4.5" bit. Cob sized bridles. We have to shorten up the arab Daf's bridle to fit her. She stands about 15.2h, maybe a little less, is fine boned and flatter muscled for a quarter horse. I don't know that she is really jumping material, but she is a blast to ride. The only beef I have is she has a natural jog for a trot unless you push her up. And do not laugh at her. She quits. Comes to a dead halt. She's trying really hard, and you laugh at her, you hurt her feelings and she doesn't want to play anymore.

HP, I'm waiting for BlueHeron. I have never arm-wrestled with someone over the net b4, should be fun.
I'll take Cami:)
And Johnny, and Star, oooh, and Nicely Dun's cutie-pie, too...
Even if his HEAD SET (arrrgghhh) is set towards Superhero.
Maybe the Dun wants to be SooperHorse:)
heck, he already IS.

GAWD
If I had a million dollars..
I'm bumping us over 13 comments, sheeples.
Can't be tooo careful:)

Awesome picture!!!! Gee whiz!!!!!
Thanks for the flowers, we had two pretty days of sun, now rain and cold for the next 5. Kinda like a kick in the teeth!!!!

Dena said...

Go you have many skills. The crowd?
They are not throwing flowers at you.
They are throwing horses!!!
Damn nice ones from the looks of it.

Have you started reconditioning your tack?
Looks like you have a busy season ahead of you.:)

Wowsa girl! That is one lovely picture! Got a QH that you would love, loves to jump, BIG mover, kind as kind ever was. Only problem is that if he thinks you may fall he'll just drift to a stop...carefully...
Now you're going to just have to do a farm tour!

secondwindacres said...

GL, the Paint is a HUGE mover too. After Courtney retired him from the ring she started conditioning her pony and is now riding her new horse Tucker and her legs are TIRED and SORE. It's because she never had to use her muscles to post on the Paint. He just threw her up there with every stride. :) He could use someone with much more knowledge and talent than us to bring him to his potential. He loves the trails but can do so much more. Are you still arm wrestling with BH? ::sigh:: :) :)

Hey Go. I solved my mystery. Watching that East meets West video pointed me in the right direction.

I AM a Slacker. Seriously, I am. I work hard at what I do BUT not that hard.

It is my mind set. And the language. I am overwhelmed by the concept of spending years training the same horse.
Which is why I start young stuff, repair older stuff, and send it on.

So, shame on me. And my apologies to the DQs.
I mean that sincerely.

blueheron said...

HP, Did Sara do some jumping with Cami? Or was that another horse? Just poles and low, low crosses, I thought?

So, now I'm arm wrestling Tracy and GL for Cami? I must say, she's worth it. I really like Cami. She's got the most amazing brain...Smart, thoughtful, present. The smallest cannon bones I've seen on a QH...

GL, I love the phrase about calling Dressage "training." Yes. That is what it is.

horspoor said...

Oh, that's right. Cami did do some ground poles up to 18"...oohhh big jumps. lol She did love it. That was a surprise as I recall. No, her cannons aren't the smallest you've seen, they are the smallest on my place. lol Think about Belle, or Thomas, proportionately they are smaller than Cami.

blueheron said...

I'll have to look at them when I'm down again. Bell and Thomas are so bulky up top, I never really noticed the cannons. Cami is so elegant... She'd love to be a barrel racer or a jumper. Remember her reaction to seeing Sheri's horse blast around? "Oooh, I want to do that!" lol.
