Happy Birthday, Mom

































You'd have been 82 today, darlin'. These pictures of your wedding day, are how I will always remember you. Beautiful, kind, always trying to be happy, always trying to be the kindest person you could be. The picture of you and dad on the beach in Naples, when you were still happy together..

I miss you. I hope you're having fun, playing with Jethro, getting your butt pinched by Larry. Giggling and goopying. Enjoying your mom again, finally, after caring for her for so many years.
Say hi to Gams.

Your sweet face is burned into my heart. I'm so glad we were the best of friends.
We were very lucky, weren't we? I wish I'd known, just HOW lucky I was. Sure takes me a while, but I got there, Mom. I know you are laughing your butt off at the gardener I FINALLY became.

What a beautiful tribute. So glad theat you and your mom had a good relationship to the end, She was clearly a beutiful lady with a wonderful spirit,a legacy that she has obviously passed on to you. She must smile at you with pride !

Tried to post earlier, but it is gone, so I'll say again how much I like the pictures of your place! Reminds me of my place, here, in Idaho. Same barren trees and ice and snow. :)

Beautiful post. It is so moving. I lost my darling grandmother a couple of years ago and this post reminds me of her.

Were is everyone congregating. I'm talking to CCC via email but that's about it. It would great if we could get together as a group again on some blog perhaps Trojan Mouse's blog. Gosh, I don't know.

TJM's gets the most rabid of the enablers, I've found. But I had a great Time learning about the ASB for example, and she always straight shoots it.

Oh man, you were lucky. What a beautiful picture of your mum.
My parents stopped by today, and I'm a lousy daughter because I DREAD them. Hey, they did about every abusive thing a parent could do, which is why I went to work for the carnival at 15 and never looked back....(they swore they were only staying together for the kids so we all left home at 15 or 16)but I digress.
I think there's always a time to forgive, but sometimes it's hard to do.
You are beautiful like your mom. Cool.

You know, where, according to P. Karl, horses can't raise their heads, and bend their necks,at the same time? I asked it again..

"when philippe karl wrote about a horse not being capable of raising the head while flexing the neck to the side, he was referring to the two muscles running along either side of the neck that work together to raise the head (as in a horse hollowing his topline and bracing against the bit.) a horse may raise his head with the assistance of the nuchal ligament, but the neck muscles play a more important role, particularly when the horse is bracing or above the bit.

by flexing the horse in front of the wither (ie, not just at the poll, which can twist,) one of those muscles raising the head must disengage to allow the neck to flex laterally, and therefore the horse can no longer maintain a high head. he will relax those bracing muscles and lower the head and neck.

also, this exercise is done at the halt, not at speed, and the head is not brought round the the knee, but simply to the side - from the base of the neck - with the arm extended in a wide leading rein on the snaffle.

most of my horses are well-bred warmbloods, TB's etc, most with naturally high, round head and neck conformation, and this holds true for them, so i do not find it to be an issue of selective conformation, but ordinary equine mechanics.

however, my one disclaimer is that, with the george-morrisification of the h/j world, his absurd idea of bending and rein aids has become gospel: that the primary rein for bending and turning is the 'direct rein of opposition': using this rein for lateral flexions causes the horse's neck to back up and twist at the poll (the infamous 'only the corner of the eye' bend) and though incorrect, this can be done with the head raised. no one outside of this school would consider this correct lateral flexion, though it does happen."

Oh, well, dressage riders think George Morris is absurd, but they aren't listening either. I think it's all absurd, kinda. Really.

I have practiced flexing a horse's neck from side to side, to help him straighten. Crookedness benefits from that type of exercise. The horse learns to move straighter.
I have never ever over-flexed his head to his chest.

I've also re-trained rubber neckers, RollKurred. They are the hardest to fix. They are truly broken.

I have seen many jumpers warmed up with suppling exercises, that supple the neck lengthwise. They ALWAYS go back to straight forward.

Bad training is the same across all disciplines.

I seen! I am so proud of you! Oh, what fabulous rides...those 'make the hair on your arms stand up, there is proof of majick rides', when you are in the presence of great souls. Those memories never ever go away. I am sure when I am old and senile I will tell stories of my favorite rides long after I forget my name!
Proud of you for stirring up the bullshit. Damn, learning anatomy is so important. Oh yeah, but that just might mess up the fanatic's BELIEF system, mucking them up with facts. As far as the "horses don't really love you" theory espoused on Mugs, bullshit. SOME horses don't love you, but I have 3 in my pasture right now that will leave the herd to come sleep by my tent when I'm camping, and a black Arab mare that will fight for me. Literally. Now that would be a prey animal going against it's instincts. May not be love, but I'll take it. I'm learning so much from you! Actually, might even get brave and start writing my story. I've been chicken, but will follow your lead!

On the horses don’t really love you comment, I think that they get attached. After Trooper first started to bond with me he would leave his herd and sleep under my bedroom window. I could hear him out there stomping at flies no matter what time of night I woke up. When I got up in the morning his Shire nose could just reach the second story window. We would sniff at me and I would say good morning to the nose in my window. The nose would immediately follow me to the bathroom and wait patiently while I go ready. Next, the nose would follow me to the kitchen while I had breakfast and wait for me to finish. Once outside he’d follow me everywhere. He’d even leave his herd to stand beside me while I sat on the deck. He would stand patiently for hours in the hot sun standing beside me while not eating or drinking. Occasionally, he would wonder off to get something to eat or drink. He definitely showed that he had a stronger connection with me than his herd.

Another horse that I was part-boarding was a huge Belgian cross that looked like a heavy Warmblood. When I came to visit him in the evening he could hear my footsteps coming up the road. I would then hear the most pathetic whiny come out of the barn which sounded like some was killing him. It was funny he could tell my footsteps from everyone elses from a long distance away. Once I got in to the barn there would be this giant horse standing on his hind legs with his nose and front hooves hanging out over the top door of his double door stall whinnying for me to get him out of their so we could go play. He never behaved this way with anyone else.

The cowpoke world, doesn't WANT the horse to "love" him, cowboys want a working harse, and they "aren't capable" of love to the animal behaviour purists.

Yeah, as if. Horses are highly emotional creatures, they have a very acute sense of safe.
That's love, to me.

The Animal behaviour Guys don't like to admit that animals have emotions, and they've been showing them, ALL along. We just don't "see" them. Or WANT to see them.

The simplest emotions are the most powerful.
Animals know this. People don't.
